E o Melo Antunes disse: "É uma responsabilidade tremenda." Sim, está aí a origem do 25 de Novembro. Quando discuti com o Melo Antunes a questão de um poder de democracia directa ou um poder de democracia representativa burguesa, como aquela que existe hoje no País, segundo o modelo ocidental, o Melo Antunes disse-me: "Vamos lá ver. Talvez a gente consiga conciliar..." DN

E se em 74?…

Não tem havido revolução ou esta tivesse sido dominada? Sem 25 de Abril, o mundo não evoluiria de forma muito diferente. A guerra colonial teria de ter uma solução política, sob pena de o país acentuar a sua situação de pária à escala internacional. A então CEE e os gringos derrotados no Vietname, mas a não quererem perder a África Austral para a órbita soviética, constituiriam o isco e a pressão à negociação política. Uma evolução política à espanhola seria incontornável. Evitaríamos Vasco Gonçalves e as suas ruinosas nacionalizações; as imbecilidades de Otelo e de toda a restante tropa fandanga; o socialismo na Constituição e o Estado Social criado por decreto; o endividamento galopante e, quiçá, os resgates pelo FMI. A alternativa ao 25 de Abril seria essa, não a perpetuação do regime. E hoje estaríamos indiscutivelmente melhor, sem ter de aturar estes patéticos rituais beatíficos das comemorações. E afinal para comemorar o quê???

It should be noted that since the establishment of Israel — the only state in the region to guarantee freedom of worship to all faiths and the only state to have outlawed racism — the Arab Christian population has increased by an estimated 2,000 per cent.

Never mind the ‘Israeli apartheid’ myths that flourish on Britain’s university campuses. What intrigues me is why Britain’s political and media classes, normally so sensitive to humanitarian issues, turn away in the face of the very real apartheid-style oppression that persists in the Arab world; why they remain silent as Christians are persecuted and the UN Human Rights Council, which last month endorsed the human rights record of Libya’s late Muammar Gaddafi, peddles its bizarre nonsense.

At least part of the answer can be found in the tendency of the British cognoscenti, in thrall to their colonial guilt no less than their need for oil, to infantilise Arab regimes. Arabs are not held accountable for their behaviour or responsible for their actions because this would contradict the script.

I once asked the Israel correspondent of the Times why he devoted so much space to Israel’s misdeeds and so little to those of the Palestinians. His response was succinct: ‘We expect more of Israel.’

There is a problem with that answer. To hold Arabs to an inferior standard, overlooking cruel excesses against a particular section of their own population and turning a blind eye to the antics of the UN Human Rights Council, carries the unpleasant whiff of racism.

Portugal tem de devolver 23,4 mil milhões: Calendário de pagamentos

Janeiro - Vence uma linha de Bilhetes do Tesouro no valor de 2,3 mil milhões de euros.

Fevereiro - Data de amortização de uma linha de Bilhetes do Tesouro no valor de 3,8 mil milhões de euros. Além disto, Portugal terá de pagar 224 milhões de euros referentes à taxa de cupão de uma linha de Obrigações do Tesouro.

Março - Portugal devolve aos credores 1,8 mil milhões de euros referentes a uma linha de Bilhetes do Tesouro que atinge a maturidade.

Abril - O Estado compromete-se a devolver 432 milhões de euros referentes a uma linha de Bilhetes do Tesouro que atinge a maturidade. Além disso, terá de pagar 575 milhões de euros referentes a taxas de cupão de duas linhas de Obrigações do Tesouro.

Maio - Atingem a maturidade 350 milhões de euros referentes a uma linha de Bilhetes do Tesouro.

Junho - No total, Portugal terá de devolver 12 mil milhões de euros aos mercados. 10,2 mil milhões dizem respeito a uma linha de Obrigações do Tesouro que atinge a maturidade. Os restantes 1,8 mil milhões dizem respeito ao pagamento de taxas de cupão de várias linhas de Obrigações do Tesouro.

Julho e Agosto - Até ao momento, Portugal não tem agendados reembolsos aos investidores nestes meses.

Setembro - Portugal paga 531 milhões de euros referentes à taxa de cupão de uma linha de Obrigações do Tesouro.

Outubro - O Estado remunera os investidores em 1,5 mil milhões de euros, referentes ao pagamento de taxas de cupão de cinco linhas de OT.

Novembro e Dezembro - Até ao momento não estão previstos pagamentos referentes a dívida que vence ou ao pagamento de taxas de cupão nestes meses.

Foi esta noite. Fui directo à página onde, na obra que diz ser de memórias políticas, Mário Soares trata do que eu conheço de perto, por ter vivido na pele parte da trama: a história da sua ligação, enquanto Presidente da República, ao território de Macau. Detive-me nas linhas que dedica ao caso Emaudio/TDM. Poucas linhas, esclarecedoras linhas.
Diz que foi afinal uma campanha lançada «pela extrema direita» contra ele, para o envolver na história. Mente, por contrariar a verdade. A questão não tem a ver com políticos de qualquer quadrante que se tenham mobilizado contra si, mas com os factos que não se conseguem iludir.

PANAJI: Goa has experienced the worst kind of colonialism as it was ruled by a weak power- the
Portuguese. No other territory has lived under such long and effective domination as Goa, professor
Boaventura de Souza Santos, director at the Centre for Social Studies at Coimbra University in
Portugal said, speaking at the Goa University on Sunday.
Nostalgia about colonial rule is too simplistic a view as such a rule can never be a good thing,
professor Souza said, while speaking at the opening ceremony of Goa University's three-day
international conference on the eve of Goa's 50th year of liberation from the Portuguese rule.
"Goa was colonized by a weak colonial power. The official British historian under the English
colonial rule wrote of the Portuguese as being 'barbarian'. So it was a different, complex situation
for Goa under the Portuguese rule," the historian said. Highlighting the difference between the
powerful fellow colonizers of Portugal and the then relatively sparsely populated nation, the scholar
said, "At one point, Portugal shifted its capital to a colony- Brazil. One cannot imagine the French
or British rulers doing such a thing. It was then a country of just one billion which was ruling across
five continents. Mozambique was being ruled from Goa."

Their achievement was one dimension of something much greater: a historic reconciliation between the Roman Catholic Church and the ideals of the French Revolution that made possible the collaborative capitalism of postwar Germany and Italy. Even today, it is the ideological bedrock of the European Union.

Never again should a parliamentary assembly just cede power to a Hitler or a Pétain. Instead, the architects of post-war European democracy opted for as many checks and balances as possible – and, paradoxically, for empowering unelected institutions to strengthen liberal democracy as a whole.

Importantly, European institutions – especially the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights – also fit this understanding of democracy through prima facie undemocratic mechanisms.

Today, many Europeans are clearly dissatisfied with this conception of democracy. Many have the impression that the continent is entering what the political scientist Colin Crouch has called a “post-democratic” era. Citizens increasingly claim that political elites do not properly represent them, and that directly elected institutions – national parliaments in particular – are forced to bow to unelected bodies like central banks. Passionate grassroots protest and surging populist parties across the continent are the result.

Ordinary Europeans long trusted elites with the business of democracy – and often even seemed to prefer unelected elites. If they now want to modify the social contract (and assuming that direct democracy remains impossible), change ought to be based on a clear, historically grounded sense of which innovations European democracy might really need – and of whom Europeans really trust to hold power. That discussion has barely begun.
